The very first thing that you have to learn how to do is keyword research. When it comes to keyword research for beginners I strongly recommend that you use the Google Keyword Tool. It will give a pretty good idead of how many people are searching for that keyphrase. It will also tell you how many people are advertising for that key phrase. Both of these are important. Once you are at the Google Keyword Tool (search Google keyword Tool), you will need to login to your Google Account or sing up for one – there is no cost.

Now that you are signed in simply put in the base word into the top box. So what do I mean by based word. If you were selling a stretch marks cream then you would put in the keyphrase “stretch marks”. Then hit enter!

After a few seconds a list of keywords will appear. The top list will have all the keywords that have the keyphrase stretch marks in it. The second list below will all all related words to stretch marks such as c section scars or skin tears etc…  But before you start getting keywords take the drop down on the right above the keywords and change it from broad to exact. You will see that the number of times a word is searched drops significantly. Now start looking for keywords that really make sense for your product that is searched between 150 and 1200 times per month. Now look for the keywords within those parameters that have the least amount of advertising competition. For example stretch mark creams is searched 480 times per month and only has half the bar filled in for advertising. This is one of the words that you want to go after. There should be low competition and just a few good and revelant links should get you on the first page and hopefully in the top 3.

So why not go after the very top keywords like stretch marks. Simply because it will cost a good $5000 of your own marketing money (much more if you hire an seo service) to get on the first page. Withthe scenario above you can easily get 5 to 10 orders a month with that one keyphrase. Find as many of those keyphrases as you can and you will have revenue to support your next leg up when it comes to marketing and you will be ready to go after more low hanging keyword fruit or you can move up to  the medium level and go after those keywords.
